VISTA x THE PRINCE'S TRUST (Manchester)

Gaydio Academy partnered with Vista and The Prince's Trust to deliver 5 weeks of radio skills training for 15 young participants with an age range of 14-26 years to give them a kick-start in their media career.

How The 5 Weeks Went

This involved training on the following:

  • Introduction to the radio industry

  • Journalism and Audience training from BBC's Emma Goswell

  • Creating news bulletins and reading them as a group

  • Learning how and where to compile content for radio shows

  • Looking into music playlisting for the stations and where to find new music

  • Creating their own radio station from scratch, with content, music, competitions and presenter reads

  • Looking into behind-the-scenes roles (Marketing, Programme Manager, Sales etc) and taking on those roles for the day

  • Producing and presenting a half-hour radio show

  • Producing adverts for 5 businesses to go live on air across the UK (creating ideas, scripting, voice-over and sound effect selection, audio editing to completion)

News Demos - Jay, Tashinga, Jaiden, Precious, Millie, Aaron

The participants were introduced to Journalism and Audience by BBC's Emma Goswell. Emma discussed her many years in radio working for some of the biggest stations in the country. She showed off her newsreel of news stories over the years, which all had a different tone. Participants researched their own news stories which would be suitable for Gaydio and then went into the studio to present and produce a story of their own. We have included an example of a final demo from one of the groups below:

3 Minute Demos - Tashinga

Towards the end of the course, participants consolidated the skills they had learnt (journalism, audience, producing, presenting, content) and were given the opportunity to record their own 30-minute show. Tashinga wowed us with hers and we have included it below:

Advert Demo

The final challenge was to create, script, produce and edit radio adverts for 5 different organisations that would go live on air on Gaydio in 2022. Participants spoke to the organisations to get an idea of what they wanted from their advert, scripted each advert, got them voiced by professional voice actors, and edited them with sound effects and music to create a final product for the client to sign off. We have included an example of one of the finished adverts below:
